Pie Birds

Inspired by the old poem, Sing a Song of Sixpence, pie bird vents have long since added a homely touch to pies, kitchens as well as serving the functional aspect of cooling pies. I happened upon the November 2010 issue of Country Living in the grocery store and saw these little black birds and had to find out more.

You can have these adorable little crow pie vents for your ThanksgivingĀ or Christmas dinner, just purchase themĀ here.

Sing a song of sixpence,
A pocket full of rye.
Four and twenty blackbirds,
Baked in a pie.
When the pie was opened,
The birds began to sing;
Wasn’t that a dainty dish,
To set before the king?
The king was in his counting house,
Counting out his money;
The queen was in the parlour,
Eating bread and honey.
The maid was in the garden,
Hanging out the clothes;
When down came a blackbird
And pecked off her nose.
There was such a commotion,
that little Jenny wren;
Flew down into the garden,
and put it back again.

Magpie (pica pica) Rhymes

One for sorrow
Two for joy
Three for a girl
Four for a boy
Five for silver
Six for gold
Seven for a secret never to be told.

One for sorrow
Two for mirth
Three for a wedding
Four for a birth
Five for heaven
Six for hell
Seven you’ll see the de’il himsel’

One for sorrow, two for joy;
Three for a girl, four for a boy;
Five for silver, six for gold;
Seven for a secret, never to be told;
Eight for a wish, nine for a kiss;
Ten for a bird that’s best to miss.

I cross the magpie
The magpie crosses me,
Back luck to the magpie,
And good luck to me.

Some tunes to crow about…

Well, being a corvid lover and all…I decided I would gather up some music about the intelligent birds. Some of the songs are about the bird, some are named after the bird, some liken love or life after the birds. All of them are worth listening to—so sit back, push play and enjoy. The music player is in the upper left corner.

If you have a song about crows, ravens, jays or any corvid you would like to share, please feel free to contact us below.
A detailed play list is coming soon—so you can get these songs too.
